While the lobby of Parliament on 11th May to protest against the cuts is an important event can I call upon all disabled people who are against the cuts to attend the ‘March for the Alternative: Jobs, Growth, Justice...’ to be held in Central London on 26th March.
This event, staged by the TUC, is open to everyone; and indeed, the TUC is encouraging everyone, not just trade unionists, to come along and voice their concerns. We’re hoping to match the massive anti-war march eight-years ago that saw 2 million people take to the streets of London in common cause against an unjust war.
The larger trade unions are laying on free transport; Unite is even offering free transport for non-union members who might struggle otherwise to attend. So, if you’re interested phone your local Unite office and enquire.
Realising the disproportionate affects that the cuts will have on both disabled workers and service users the TUC has agreed to allow a contingent of disabled people to be at the head of the march. This will also allow us to set the pace rather than being left behind to chew on the dust of others; arriving at the rally as rubbish is being cleared and banners shouldered.
There are going to be a number of other initiatives that the TUC is taking to ensure disabled, elderly infirm and people with young kids are looked after. I’ll post these as they’re fed to me.
We, disabled people, need to come out in numbers on 26th March. This demonstration is as much an expression of our anger as anyone else’s; if we don’t stop this vicious bunch of wreckers in the Coalition our standard of living will retreat 30-years.
